Trend Tracker: Hearts

By Bailey

Heart decorations add a homely feel (look best on door handles)

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I’ve been thinking about the saying ‘home is where the heart is’. A trend I’ve spotted not only online but in the homes of my nearest and dearest, is the use of hearts. Wooden hearts, button hearts, beaded hearts – you name it, it’s heart shaped. They have no purpose other than giving your nest a homely feel – but that’s their beauty (and why I’m a firm follower of this trend). Simple yet cosy.

Best on door handles, I heart this heart trend. Here’s my top picks from the web and around my home. Home is where the hearts are…

Trend Tracker: Cartography

By Bailey

Is it me, or are there millions more map-inspired decorations for the home than there were three years ago?

Who you are is largely based on where you come from and where you’ve been in life. Which is why I really like this trend as I’m all about making sure you decorate your home in a way that represents you.

I am certainly an ambassador of this trend. A little while ago, I stumbled across a vintage map of Sussex at an Antiques Fair. Bought for a small price, I had it professionally framed and it now hangs in my office/craft room. I don’t usually get pictures professionally framed but as Sussex is where I’m from, this map was close to my heart, so I gave it the VIP treatment. (You can see it in my How-To: Add the Personal Touch post).

Something I’ve spotted recently in shops, are maps cut into a heart shape and framed, like these ones…

News: Burns Night!

By Bailey

Mama Bailey's thistle glass: You couldn't drink out of anything more appropriate on Burns Night

This Wednesday is Burns Night – celebrating the life and poetry of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, over a scrummy Scottish supper.

I’ve had the pleasure of attending a number of Burns suppers over the years and they’ve all included tasty neeps and tatties (mashed potato, mashed swede and a smidgen of nutmeg), as well as the all-important haggis (sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, known as the ‘pluck’, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices and salt – mixed with stock and traditionally encased in a sheep’s stomach). Haggis sounds like an odd dish but trust me – it’s really delicious. And what’s a Burns Night without including the subject of Robert Burns’ most famous poem, Address to a Haggis (1789)?

Other than the food, an aspect of Burns Night that I really love is when the host goes to town on tartan. It’s such a striking pattern to include around your house and on your dinner table – adding an air of festivity during the dismal month of January.

With this in mind, I’ve had a hunt online and picked my favourite tartan decorations for the home. I hope you take some inspiration if you’re celebrating this Wednesday.

How-To: Decorate a Christmas Tree

By Bailey

Tree decoration: Hickory Dickory

This How-To is more about how I decorated my Christmas tree, rather than how you should – simply because I feel that there is no right or wrong way. Your Christmas tree is personal to you, so should reflect you. If that means it’s completely mismatch, then great! Of course, stylish, colour-coordinated trees look good (i.e. ones found in Selfridges, Liberty London…) but you need to make sure you and your flat mates/boyfriend/hubby/family love it. That’s all that matters.

Here’s some of my tree decorating tips I’ve learnt along the way. I’ve also included some pics of my favourite tree decorations to give you some festive inspiration. Enjoy! And happy December everyone…
